But what exactly is stone paper?
Stone paper bags consist of 80% limestone and 20% bio-polyethylene resin (HDPE). Limestone is one of the most common raw materials and comes from quarries as a waste product. Bio-HDPE is also a waste product and serves as a binder. This bio-plastic can be obtained from sugar cane waste, for example. So, unlike the regular paper bags, no trees are needed for the production of stone paper. By replacing your plastic carrier bag with stone paper bags, you are helping to protect the environment.
A big advantage of stone paper is that it originally has a white color and therefore does not need further bleaching. In addition, these bags have a long service life as moisture cannot damage the material. Furthermore, it is more resistant to tearing than regular paper bags and is an extremely durable material. The high density of the bag ensures that it will still maintain the same shape over time.
Something to consider, is that stone paper dissolves when it is permanently exposed to the sun. Then the natural decomposition process starts, which makes stone paper not suitable for exclusive outdoor use. However, it can withstand temperatures of up to -40 degrees, making it ideal for use in cold storage.
